An institute (named National Cancer Institute) for treating cancer patients is finally a reality. Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the RM340mil centre was for the people. He lost his wife, Datin Paduka Seri Endon Mahmood, to breast cancer in October 2005. She suffered five years fighting it.
The Prime Minister said, “In a way it has special meaning to me but this is not exclusively for me or my feelings,” he told newsmen.
“This is about what the rakyat wants. The number of people suffering from cancer is increasing, so we need to provide the best treatment.”
According to statistics, each year, there are at least 40,000 new cancer patients in the country and about 80% of them are detected rather late.
Among the facilities available will be radiotherapy and oncology, nuclear treatment, surgical oncology, palliative care and daily comprehensive treatment with 252 beds for in-patients.
“The institute will also have a cancer management centre offering programmes for smokers and alcoholics to stop their habit, as well as campaigns on healthy living.
