Malaysian Stamps On Dragon Boat World Championship

If you are a stamp collector or a collector of Malaysian stamps, this batch of new stamps that will be going on sale in Post Offices around the country on August 1, may interest you.

It is a special collection of commemorative stamps to mark the International Dragon Boat Federation Club Crew World Championship 2008. This is the first time that Malaysia is hosting this event which will be held in Penang, at the Teluk Bahang Dam from July 31 to Aug 3.

"Dragon boat racing is a team sport that originates from China. The dragon boat is long and narrow and combines the power, speed and endurance of 12 or 20 rowers. During races, the boats are always rigged with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails, and the members of each team can be seen rowing with full concentration in a synchronised movement, led by a drummer." - The Star

The stamps and miniature sheets come in three designs and measure 40mm x 30mm. They are printed in sheets of 20 on SPM watermark, phosphor coated paper and are available in three denominations – 30sen, 50sen and RM1. Members of the public can also buy the miniature sheet, 120mm x 60mm in size, at RM2.

If you happen to be in Beijing, you will be able to view these stamps at a stamp exhibition showcasing them in Beijing from Aug 7 to 18. This exhibition is to promote Malaysian stamps to collectors from other countries.
