Malaysia Participating in Earth Hour, Sat., March 28, 2009

In support of Earth Hour, lights will be out in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan on Sat., March 28 for one hour starting 8:30pm.

Earth Hour is an annual event that World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund (WWF) started in Sydney, Australia, in 2007 to get households and businesses to turn off their lights for an hour to raise awareness on climate change.

Malaysia is joining the effort this year. So far, 1,189 cities and towns have pledged their support to Earth Hour 2009 and the aim is to get one billion votes to be presented during the meet in Copenhagen for the United Nations Climate Change conference in December.

On the local front, World Wildlife Foundation Malaysia hopes to get at least five million people to take part in the programme. Let's do our small part to help our planet. If we don't, who will!

Malaysian Students Came Out Tops in Mathematics

Because of the currency exchange and the good education system, Malaysia is becoming popular with foreign students. The latest achievement by a private school in an international Mathematics Contest augurs well for the school and for the education system in Malaysia. Story from The Star below..

Students set a world record at World Maths Day contest

STUDENTS from a Malaysian school won top honours in an international Mathe-matics Contest organised by the Unicef and 3P Learning Centre of Australia in conjunction with the recent World Maths Day.

Cempaka Schools of Malaysia swept the top five places in the High School category, beating students from other schools around the world.

In addition, Cempaka also came out tops in the Middle School category (for students age 9-14).

In the worldwide competition, 1,952,879 students from over 38,058 schools, in 204 countries, participated. The on-line competition challenged the Math acuity and speed of participants.

“I am very proud of our students,” Cempaka Schools chairman Datin Freida Pilus said of the world record-breaking event.

“It was a clean sweep; our students are world beaters”, she continued.

“The emphasis that Cempaka gives to Mathematics and the Sciences has shown superlative results. This was also reflected in our SPM results released this week, where we scored 100% distinctions in Science and 92% distinctions in Mathematics.”

In their record-breaking feat that placed them on top of the world, the students correctly answered 4,967,325 questions, in 324,943 minutes which is 66.19% of the total correct answers of the top ten classes in the world.

This has drawn media attention from as far away as Tasmania, Australia, to Florida, the United States, which goes to show the reach of the maths competition.

“This is solid proof and world recognition that Malaysian schools can be the best in the world. We now have a Malaysian brand in education,” Freida said.

Fish is Back

I am happy to report that after yesterday's post of No Fish Today..., the situation has been corrected after the Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister stepped in to settle the dispute and announced to rescind – with immediate effect – the decision compelling the use of insulated fish containers sourced only from one supplier. This would mean that the importers can use the insulated containers on a voluntary basis. With this, fish is back in the markets..

No Fish Today...

If you have been at the fish market and were wondering as to the short supply of fish and the soaring prices, know that there is some sort of a fish protest going on in Malaysia.

The Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia (LKIM) now requires local distributors and wholesalers to use insulated fish containers from only one supplier.

The ruling, which came into effect last week, has been criticised by the distributors and wholesalers.

Apparently, these insulated containers cost more than the ones that are being used and that are easily available.

No fish today.....
