Formula 1 is in Kuala Lumpur this weekend

If you are in Kuala Lumpur and noticed a lot more tourists than usual the past week or so, it could be due to Formula One (F1) being in town.

That's right, this is F1 weekend here in the city. It's all happening at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) from 22 to 24 March.

If you are visiting KL as a tourist and was having difficulty securing a hotel room, F1 could also be the reason. Hotel accommodations in the city and surrounding areas have been booked solid and at easily three times the rate of a non-F1 period. Take a cue here, if you plan to visit KL on a Formula One period, best to book months ahead to secure accommodation.

Formule One in Malaysia

Last weekend, Kuala Lumpur was abuzz with activity because it was the venue Formula One Grand Prix and look who came to town.

A Ferrari fan all dressed up as a Roman soldier complete with a Trojan helmet, a sword and a mock prancing horse attached to his costume, property developer, Kwai Hau, was definitely a sight to behold at the Formula 1 last Sunday. The horse was to symbolise the logo of his favourite team.

Hau, who’s originally from Hong Kong and currently living in Britain, became an instant “celebrity” when he arrived at the Sepang circuit's mall area.

He was stopped by many F1 fans for pictures as they were amused by his costume.

Hau said he would usually dress up in interesting costumes to add to the excitement.

“Last year, I was in a car. This year, my friends made me this costume,” said Hau, who has been an F1 fan since 1983.

Formula One

The Formula One races are happening right here in Kuala Lumpur. Felipe Massa continued his momentum from late last season by taking pole position for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix. Massa, who led both of Friday's practices in a Ferrari, had a qualifying time of 1 minute, 35.043 seconds Saturday for his fourth career pole and first this season. The Brazilian ended the 2006 season with two straight poles.

The weather has been great. It's extremely hot, in fact, and it was reported that the track temperature which went up to 51°C in the afternoon forced the drivers to go slower.
