The Star reported today that more people are being evacuated as floods in Pahang worsen overnight, with the number of evacuees rising to 95 Friday from the 64 on Thursday.

As at 10am this morning, Km18 of the Gebeng-Kuantan Road was flooded and that stretch was closed to light vehicles.

63 people from Kampung Teladas in the Kemaman district were forced to evacuate Thursday night. The good news is, much of the floodwaters receded by early this morning and as at 9am, only 10 people remained at the relief center hall.

A bridge linking the villages of Teladas and Air Putih was made impassable by rising floodwaters for some time Thursday but is now passable.

No More FREE Plastic bags and Polystyrene at Local Council Hawker Centres

If you are visiting Penang, this is useful information for when you go shopping. Do bring along your own shopping bag.

Penang's ruling on ‘No Free Plastic Bags’ and ‘No Polystyrene at Local Council Hawker Centres’ will come into effect tomorrow, Jan 1, 2011. This is in line with Penang's objective to reduce the state's carbon footprint as announced earlier by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng when tabling the 2011 Budget at the state legislative assembly.

The ruling will cover all hypermarkets, supermarkets, departmental stores, pharmacies, fast food restaurants, nasi kandar outlets, convenience stores including petrol kiosks and chain stores.

Mini markets and sole proprietorship businesses will have to adhere to the plastic ruling on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in order to ensure the renewal of their licences.

Shoppers will be charged 20 sen for each plastic bag requested. Money collected from the sale of plastic bags will be channelled to ‘Partners Against Poverty’ Special Fund to help the state’s hardcore poor.

For shoppers who buy in volume, used cardboard boxes and paper bags will be available at shopping outlets and hypermarkets.

Random checks will be conducted by government department officers to ensure adherence to the ruling.

A Cruise for the Break

Guest post written by A Tropical Holiday

This year for Christmas, my wife Janine and I are doing something very exciting. Our kids are away at grad school and work full time, so they unfortunately cannot come back home this year. Janine and I were pretty sad about having an empty house for Christmas, so we decided to take a special vacation this year and head to the Bahamas on a week online cruise. This is our second year of retirement, and we decided that it was time to really treat ourselves.

We are almost all packed, and I just purchased a new pair of MiracleEar hearing aids so that I don't miss a thing on this vacation. Janine and I have plans to Jet Ski and parasail on the third day of the cruise. How exciting does that sound? This is truly going to be a memorable Christmas for just the two of us. Sure it's really sad to not have our family this year, but after they graduate in a few months we are looking forward to a family vacation. We haven't had one of those in years!

The Horizon at Myrtle Beach

Let me take a break from talking about Malaysia and talk about a holiday destination outside of Malaysia instead.

I first read about Myrtle Beach from a blog I happened upon and found this holiday destination truly appealing. If I get the chance, I would like to holiday at Myrtle Beach. The Horizon is one of Myrtle Beach best hotels. It is modern and all their rooms are airy being ocean-view rooms.

See what I mean? What a view, don't you think? You get to see beautiful sunrises and sunsets along the coast and listen to the call of the seagulls as they soar across the shoreline waves, and more.

If you are a water-babe, there is a water recreational plaza, indoor and outdoor pools, a lazy river just to name a few. If you are golfer, you would be in for a real treat as there are over 80 golf courses to choose from!

As for accommodation, it has to be The Horizon, of course. This Myrtle Beach hotel has 143 suites of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom-type and all with private balcony. Are You Out Of Your Mind Shopping On Black Friday?

Thanks for the post from Nora Mccoy

I hear it every year. Are you out of your mind, shopping on Black Friday? You people are crazy. I'm not getting up at two o'clock in the morning just to freeze my fanny off in a parking lot waiting for the doors to open. Then I get pushed and shoved through the door, banging up my elbows and knees. And all this just for the privilege of buying a. . .wait, that's beautiful! And it's only ten dollars? Are you people crazy? You can't sell a wall clock for ten dollars!

And every year I agree with them and wait until the next week to begin my Christmas shopping. This year, however, I decided to see what all the fuss was about and so I parked (not an easy thing to do) as close to Walmart as I could and stood in line to get in the doors. I wasn't going to make a decision until I saw what all the fuss was about but I saw that Dora the Explorer doll for my three year old granddaughter and I just had to snatch it up. It was on sale for five dollars down from twelve. She's going to love it!

I was satisfied with what the ruckus was all about and so I came home, got my feet warm and watched Direct tv HD DVR.

Professional Cleaning services - The Steam Team

Being in the tropics - dusty, monsoon and all - our homes here in Malaysia do take a beating from the natural elements. Certain parts of the country experience flooding certain times of the year. For instance, the east coast states will have to be on the alert end of the year, and after that, the extra effort flood victims have to put in cleaning up their homes. For some, cleaning and rebuilding homes is sometimes part of their yearly routine. It is a tedious and back-breaking job which can ideally be handled well by cleaning experts.

If you are in Texas, you have your own cleaning experts in The Steam Team who have been in the carpet cleaning service for over 25 years! On their website, I read with awe the wide range of cleaning services they provide, and they also have information on fire damage restoration companies austin, for instance, as well as flash flood damage austin and others. Need carpet cleaning products? The Steam Team can also provide information on green carpet cleaning products austin.

So the next time you need cleaning service for fire damaged home austin, or fire damaged furniture austin, or flood and water damage austin or even fish odor removal austin, you know where to go to.

Spreading the Love

Guest post written by Lea Wayne

This time of year, I think we should all do something most of us rarely think to do in our everyday lives: help those less fortunate. As great as this time of year can be for ourselves, what with seeing all of our long-lost relatives, exchanging a bounty of gifts and more food than you can shake a stick at, it's easy to overlook those less fortunate who are probably feeling even worse this time of year. That's why I'm volunteering with a local soup kitchen twice a week this holiday season, to meet and talk with those who are in need of hot meal and a good ear that's willing to listen.

My goal: To bring holiday cheer to anyone I meet. Whether it's someone at the grocery store clerk, my boss, someone at sears cabinet refacing San Diego or whoever and you'd be surprised how a smile and a bit of good tidings can go a long way in making someone's day! Just a little food for thought.

Our First Skiing Adventure

Guest post written by Gale Slatus

Last night my husband and I had a very productive conversation. Since we retired, we haven’t done anything too out of the ordinary…which is a shame, since now we have all the time in the time in the world to! I sit in the easy chair and read my favorite novels, while Daniel fixes up the house, does his crafts. Something about our lifestyle really is making me feel old lately, and the truth is I never felt that way until we stopped working. Last night, I walked up to Daniel while he was looking for new hearing aids on HearingAids.Miracle-Ear.com and I told him that we really need to get out and do something special, something that’ll really take advantage of this free time.

Come to find out, Daniel felt just like I did. We sat down and thought about things we always wanted to do. Daniel always wanted to try skiing, and I decided it would be fun, as well. We spent an hour finding accommodations online, and we booked at an exciting ski resort in Vermont. Our trip should definitely put a little more excitement in our lives when we get on the slope for the first time.

Alor Setar flood - airport remains closed

The Sultan Abdul Halim Airport in Alor Setar remains closed because the runways are flooded, and for now, only helicopter services are available in Kedah. Affected passengers have the option to reschedule flights or make arrangements to fly from either Penang or Langkawi.

Water, water everywhere: The Kepala Batas Airport remains closed until further notice as the runway is flooded. But all is not lost. Look how beautiful the birds are! Food supply could be overflowing for them.

Meanwhile Kangar is still under water and almost the entire town remains submerged with the number of evacuees continuing to rise.

Despite the rainfall having eased since Tuesday, the situation is still unmanageable with 90% of the state capital inundated.

Buyers to pay more after second house

Penang - No plastic bag from 1 January 2011

On July 1, last year, Penang became the first state to implement a “No Plastic Bag Day” ruling in shopping complexes and hypermarkets every Monday, before it was extended to Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well from Jan 2. And come Jan 1, plastic bags will be practically banned state-wide. Below is the article reproduced from The Star:

No plastic bags from January

GEORGE TOWN: Come Jan 1, plastic bags will be practically banned state-wide.

The move – an extension of the current “No Plastic Bag Day” in shopping centres and hypermarkets on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays – means that no plastic bags can be used every day by almost all business sectors.

The ruling will cover all hypermarkets, supermarkets, departmental stores, pharmacies, fast food restaurants, nasi kandar outlets, convenience stores including petrol kiosks and chain stores.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the move would reduce the state’s carbon footprint.

“Mini markets and sole proprietorship businesses will have to adhere to the ruling on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in order to ensure the renewal of their licences.

“Previously, they only had to adhere to the ruling on Mondays,” he said when tabling the 2011 Budget at the state legislative assembly yesterday.

Lim’s two paragraph announcement on the wide-ranging plastic ban was buried inside his 27-page budget speech, apparently catching many by surprise.

To promote the “No Plastic Bag Day” ruling, the state will distribute 500,000 brochures to create public awareness besides erecting educational billboards.

On July 1, last year, Penang became the first state to implement a “No Plastic Bag Day” ruling in shopping complexes and hypermarkets every Monday, before it was extended to Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well from Jan 2.

From July 1, 2009 to Oct 28, a total of 32.5 million plastic bags were saved under this campaign.

Shoppers who did not bring their own reusable bags were charged 20 sen for each plastic bag when making purchases.

The money collected from the sale of plastic bags went to the “Partners Against Poverty” Special Fund to help the state’s hardcore poor.

Petrol RON 97 price up 5 sen to RM2.15

Here in Malaysia, there are two grades of petrol, RON 95 and RON 97. RON 95 is at RM1.85 a litre while RON 97 is at RM2.10 a litre but beginning Tuesday (today) the price of RON 97 has been increased by 5 sen and will now cost RM2.15 per litre.

RON 97 is not subsidized by the government and reflects the price of petrol in the global market. Vehicles not registered in Malaysia can only use RON 97.

It was reported on July 16 that the government had decided to withdraw the petrol subsidy for RON 97 and subject it to a managed float.

Price of RON 97 would be determined by an automatic pricing mechanism.

The Monsoon has started

If you are visiting the northern and north-eastern states or Peninsula Malaysia, you may want to take note of severe weather. Flash floods, thunderstorms, rough seas and strong winds of up to 60kph were expected to hit the northern part of the peninsula over the next few days, especially the coastal areas. The monsoon season has started.

The Meteorological Department (MMD) has issued a yellow stage warning, adding that heavy rain and thunderstorms with windy conditions were expected to occur over Kelantan and Terengganu beginning today. A yellow stage warning, the first of three warning levels, denotes a possibility of a monsoonal surge in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Coastal areas of east Johor, Kuching and Sarikei are vulnerable to sea level rise due to strong winds and battering waves. Flash floods are likely to occur in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur over low-lying areas affected by the city’s drainage system.

On Thursday, a mini twister swept through Mata Air, Jejawi, Perlis. Roofs were blown off while signboards were uprooted and houses damaged during the incident. A van was also overturned.

Going to the Gym With Style

Post contributed by Alfredo Gaines

Yesterday I decided that I needed to get out of my workout rut. Every time I went to the gym I tended to do the same old thing. I would start off on the treadmill or the elliptical machine. Then after I had warmed up a little I would hit the free weights. Occasionally I would hit up some of the other equipment but this was my typical routine. In all reality, it's boring for me and the only reason I go is so I can fit into my jeans. A sexy body doesn't make itself, sadly.

Anyway, I went to the gym and decided to try a different approach. Normally when I went I just wore some baggy work out clothes. I had never felt the need to dress up for a work out. What was the point of sweating all over my good clothes? I didn't want to buy anything just for working out either.

Well, this time I decided I would actually do just that. I went out the night before and bought a few cute little outfits that hugged my figure. I bought a few of those wrist and ankle weights too. Anyway, I was looking so cute! I set my home security system (click here for ADT SECURITY online offer TX) before heading out and felt ready to hit it hard. Wouldn't you know, when I got there the place was closed! I couldn't believe it. I didn't even realize it was a holiday. Hah!

Project Runway Is a Great Show

This guest post from Edgardo Rosa

I have been watching Project Runway for quite awhile. It seems to just get better and better as the seasons roll along. I'm usually surprised, and sometimes shocked, with what the contestants come up with. I've seen contestants come up with some really great pieces, and some that are so ugly, that there are no words.

The judges are really great, but I especially love to see Heidi Klum when I watch Project Runway on TV on satellite. Oh, by the way, I found a deal that worked out great for my Texas home at http://www.tvbydirect.com/directv-deal/TEXAS-TX-direct-tv.html. But I digress, Heidi is a very stylish woman. Her years as a fashion model have truly given her a unique perspective on what is fashionable, and what just looks like crap. She has worn the designers of the world's top designers, so if anyone would know about fashion, it would be her.

My favorite winner to date would have to be Christain Siriano. His designs are so incredibly over-the-top, but they always seem to look great. Even the models who I wouldn't necessarily consider beautiful looked amazing in his clothes. He definitely deserved to win Project Runway.

Project Runway is the best fashion themed show on TV. Period.

Printer Cartridges

Looking for a printer cartridge? Here's an online printer cartridge site to check out. Printer-cartridges.com has a wide selection of 300 different brands of printer cartridges including major brands such as Brother, Canon, Dell, HP, Konica, Lexmark, Samsung, Sharp, and many more. They also carry Ink and Toner Refill Kits for more savings for their customers.

Shopping online for printer cartridges is undoubtedly more convenient and less tedious as usually an online store carries most if not all makes and models of the equipment unlike if you were to walk into a computer store. With the extensive line of printers, sometimes, the computer store may not have stock of the printer cartridge you want and you would have to visit the next store and the next. Thus, shopping online saves you all that hassle.

The Printer-cartridges.com site is easy to navigate whereby you just need to enter your printer brand or you can enter the printer model or cartridge number if you have the information. Their alphabetical directory makes it easy to locate the printer cartridge you are looking for.

Printer-cartridges cares for the customer receiving orders promptly, so shipment is made the same day the order comes in or you get a 20% discount if delayed. US orders ship at a flat rate of $4.95 or shipping is free for orders above $45. All their products come with a one-year warranty.

There's no reason to run around to find the perfect printer cartridges to fit your machine. At Printer-Cartridges.com, shopping for what you need, be it ink refill kits, ink cartridges, toner laser cartridges, bulk toner, etc., is more convenient and with better savings too.

Geothermal Cooling can save you money

Being in the tropics, Malaysia enjoys good sunshine all year round. However, with the effects of global-warming these days, the weather can be quite unbearable at times. Because of the heat, many homes have installed air-conditioning units and these units won't function without power generated the conventional way thus tying us down to being energy-dependent.

I read with interest the other day, a geothermal cooling system that makes use of the local environment to generate energy. What the system does is it harnesses the heat from the earth and have it converted to run turbines to produce geothermal energy.

GeOasis is the company that specializes and offers geothermal systems and other earth-friendly and energy-efficient geothermal heating and air conditioning systems to the Phoenix, Arizona. With geothermal heating and air conditioning, households can save money and become energy-independent while the home enjoys comfortable cooling and heating conditions.

Benefits of geothermal systems are many including providing superior comfort, it saves you money through credits and rebates, less energy is used, the system is quiet and safe as it does not use gas, propane nor oil, the system has a long lifespan, there is greater design flexibility and geothermal systems are environmentally-friendly.

If you are in the U.S., and would like to find out if Geothermal Cooling and Heating is right for you, you can sign up for a free home analysis.

More police presence, bringing down crime

The Star reported that Police beat bases will be set up at various crime hotspots in Selangor in a move to increase police presence throughout the seven districts in the state. This is one of the latest initiatives that the police have started in Petaling Jaya that have contributed to bringing down the crime rate by 5%.

Having a police station in big residential areas not only help reduce crime, it also reduces response time needed for the police to reach the crime scene..

Elsewhere, various initiatives are being rolled out to significantly reduce crime.

In Bandar Kinrara, residents can rest easier knowing that their safety and homes are being looked after by a specially set-up horse-riding patrol. The four officers from the Mounted Unit of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) have started making their rounds from Bandar Kinara 2 to Bandara Kinara 6 during the day where reports of burglaries usually take place, as most residents would be away at work.

The mounted patrol unit initiative has already shown a commendable drop in break-in cases within the first few days.

My retirement to NYC

Guest post written by Nina Zoe

Most people that relocate when they retire move from a hustling and bustling place to a quiet, relaxed place. But I’m doing just the opposite to be near my grandchildren.

I’ve lived in Oklahoma all my life and after my daughter went to New York City for college, she settled down there. This idea didn’t settle so well with me but she’s just as stubborn as I am and has lived there since. Now that she’s started a family, it’s harder for them to make it here for visits between my grandkids’ school and extracurricular activities. We’ll video chat online with my wildblue Oklahoma but it still isn’t the same as being around them all the time.

Her and her husband recently bought a Brooklyn brownstone and suggested I move in with them since they would have the room and I was about to retire. I thought it might be a nice change that would allow me to enjoy my family more so I took them up on the offer.

Now I’m all set up in their place with wildblue satellite New York to keep up with my friends back in Oklahoma and watch the kids after school. I couldn’t be any happier!

There's no better investment than Gold to Protect Your Wealth

For centuries, buying precious metals such as gold and silver has been recognized as the best way of safeguarding savings, protecting wealth and preserving purchasing power. There is no better time to buy precious metals than now in view of rising inflation and the fluctuating value of paper currency.

As an investment product, gold is available in coin or ingot form. Ingots are generally gold ingots of pure bullion cast in a convenient size and shape which you can take physical possession of or have them kept in a depository. With world production depleting, the price of gold will only go up making gold a profitable investment.

The United States Gold Bureau is the place to buy gold coins. The professional staff at United States Gold Bureau can help you with making the right investment decision.

Protecting My Home While Traveling

Thanks to guest blogger Haley Richardson for the post.

Every year my family and I travel to Gulf Shores, Alabama for our summer vacation. It’s sort of a tradition for our family to get together for a week and have fun in the sun on the coast! A lot of people tend to ask me, however, if I ever worry about the security of my home while on vacation. To be honest, I take lots of precautions to make sure that everything is fine with my home, even when I’m not there.

One of the first things I do before going on vacation to help secure my property is take current pictures of all of my major belongings. I usually use a digital camera to do so, so that I can upload the photos to a server so that they are protected and can’t be lost. Another thing I usually do is ask my neighbor to keep an eye out over the house. I usually kindly let her know that we’ll be gone for a certain amount of time, and I ask her to keep a watch out over my house just to ensure things are going smoothly.

Last but certainly not least, I usually set my home alarm from ADT security deals Boise before leaving the house. Purchasing that system is probably one of the best things I could have ever done as everything has gone perfectly well so far!

The Situation in Nepal

If you are thinking of travelling to Nepal, you may want to read this..

From The Star today:

United States warns against traveling to Nepal

KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) - The United States has warned its citizens not to travel to Nepal after months of street protests and political turmoil in the Himalayan nation.

The warning, issued by the State Department, said the United States remains concerned about the security situation in Nepal.

The Maoist former rebels shut down the country for more than a week last month protesting against the government. Street demonstrations turned violent with clashes between communist supporters and police.

No tourists were harmed during the protests, but a general strike shut down hotels, restaurants and transportation.

Buy Gold Bars to Protect Your Wealth

With economic instability and the eroding value in paper currency, the wise choice to counteract that is to invest in gold. That precious metal which has been much revered for its withstanding value is now more valuable than ever before.

People now buy gold bars and gold in other forms to safeguard their savings to protect against inflation subsequently to create a legacy of wealth ultimately.

It has been recommended that one's investment portfolio should have at least 5% in gold. In these uncertain times, investing in gold is a safe bet to ensure one's hard-earned money and wealth is protected and preserved to maintain an individual's usual lifestyle.

Penang Street Food - Kimberly Street

Penang is primarily famous for two things, synonymous even. One, is the beaches along Batu Ferringhi, the other is her street food, mainly Chinese in origin.

Anyone visiting Penang will not go hungry as spread out all over the island are eateries that serve all kinds of street fare. These food specialities have been around for generations and are still enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.

One such place is Kimberly Street. According to Helen Ong of The Star, this long, one-way street in the heart of George Town’s Chinatown transforms into a street food paradise from mid-afternoon.

During the day, it is just another of George Town’s many busy old roads with the inevitable eateries.

Mid-afternoon, however, the middle section, particularly near the Lebuh Cintra junction, transforms into a wonderful street food paradise which goes on till they sell out in the late evening. Scattered around three or four kopitiams lining both sides of the narrow road, the brightly-lit stalls offer all types of local delights.

Among the street food found here is the famous Penang Char kway teow which is flat rice noodles stir-fried with lots of chopped garlic flavoured with soy sauces whose ingredients include egg, bean sprouts, chives, prawns, Chinese sausages, cockles (optional) and pork rinds/scratchings.

Another popular street food served here is the Hokkien fried mee. Others include a variety of other types of fried noodles, Duck Kuey Chap, desserts, and many more.

Penang is not dubbed a food paradise for nothing.

No visa rule again from July 1 for transit visitors from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh

Good news.

Malaysia will once again offer transit travellers from Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh a chance to visit the country without the need for a visa.

Malaysia has decided to reinstate from July 1 the “transit without visa” offer to travellers from the four countries after considering the advantage it would offer in terms of attracting more tourists from the region.

Malaysia previously offered a similar privilege to travellers from the Indian sub-continent but it was later revoked. Some methods will be initiated to avoid abuse of the facility.

Buying a new Swim Suit

Thanks to Samantha Hons for the guest post!

With today's economy people from all walks of life are looking for ways to cut their monthly budgets down. Some of the best ways to save money and still purchase a variety of goods, and that's through online coupons. Just like weekly newspaper print coupons, the online world has opened up to consumers looking for bargains and have created major discounts to take advantage of. I recently got my fast satellite internet from http://Get.WildBlue.com and I’m really pleased.

One of the best sites I've seen online is dealbandy.com. The site offers promotional codes from around the Internet to some of the biggest names in retail. The website offers thousands of online coupons and is updated on a daily basis. You can use the coupons on the site, print them out and use them in store if you'd like.

Another great website that offers an over abundance of coupons to help any sized family save on every day needs is coupons.com. This site is jammed packed, and is one of the biggest archives of deals you can find anywhere. You'll be hard pressed to find a bigger source for savings online.

For people that are looking for big deals and savings on computer technology and more, you could take advantage of the great deals and coupons found on techbargains.com. The site has nothing but technology based coupons so that people that need computers, printers and more can get some major discounts as well.

One thing that I've noticed when searching through these great websites is that with wild blue satellite Washington, I've managed to load pages much faster than anticipated. Some of these sites have large amounts of script and images to load, and while that might bug some, it is actually worth wading through.

With modern times, the Internet has really opened up the doors for people on a budget. I actually just moved, and used to have satellite internet Acworth NH, but have been just as happy here in Washington. You'd be surprised how many great options are available to the average person. You don't have to hunt for bargains on a weekly basis; you can now enjoy purchasing great items for your home, and even groceries, by simply looking at online coupons.

My First Trip to Las Vegas

This was guest posted by Mark Rogerts

I was excited. My wife and I were going to Las Vegas. Neither of us had been there before, which was cool because then we both had our own expectations on what the city would be like. I imagined neon lights and the sounds of slot machines while my wife pictured tall buildings and famous people.

We packed our bags into our car and went into the house to make sure we hadn’t forgotten anything. There’s no worse feeling than getting halfway to the airport and realizing you forgot your wallet or a certain pair of shoes you wanted to bring. Everything looked good, I think we had everything we wanted to take. I set our brand new ADT Home Security alarm and we were off to Vegas.

Once we arrived at the airport in Las Vegas I got us a cab to take us to our hotel. The hotel was on the other end of the famous “Strip” so we got to see all the famous hotels we’d heard about, but had never seen before. My wife’s and my expectations both turned out to be true as we went up (or down, I’m not really sure) Las Vegas Boulevard.

There was definitely tall buildings and there were billboards advertising shows by all kinds of famous people. There were neon lights everywhere. And I mean everywhere. There was no need for any other kind of lighting because the neon lights lit everything up. And one time our cab stopped at a stop light and I could actually hear people playing the slot machines. It was amazing.

Just walk the Strip and you can spend two days doing free things. This is definitely the most unique place I have ever been. Both my wife and I had the trip of our lives.
