Free Wifi and Cyber security

If you are planning to visit Malaysia, you can be assured that you will not go without access to the Internet. Especially in cities like Kuala Lumpur, hotspots for free Wifi access is practically available everywhere, in fastfood joints, cafes, shopping complexes, even at roadside mamak/tea stalls.

However, with the threat of cyber crimes looming at places you least expect, it is advisable to be careful when conducting online payments, including making credit card payments. In public places, it is wise not to log onto your bank account using your smartphone or any other mobile device. A cyber criminal may be lurking nearby, waiting to tap into your transaction and steal important data.

Cybersecurity Malaysia has advised mobile device users against using public Wifi to conduct their e-banking, online shopping or important company or personal transactions to avoid courting danger.

One way to stay safe is to avoid insecure environment for important transactions. If you can't find a secure environment, save important transmissions until you can connect to in a secure environment.
